As a result of ongoing growth within the Screening Business Unit, we have an exciting opportunity for several Scientist 1s to join our Screening Department within our Standard and Configurable Screening Team. We have one permanent position that is available immediately with a further two positions available as 6 month fixed term contracts in the first instance, with a view to those being converted to permanent contracts subject to continued expansion along the current trajectory.

As a Scientist 1 in the Assays & Screening department, you will be responsible for executing cell biology based workflows in order to generate data for high-throughput compound and functional genomic screening programmes (for example pooled and arrayed compound or CRISPR-Cas9 screens).

This is a lab-based role. Candidates will be expected to work on multiple tasks or projects simultaneously and should be organised, highly self-motivated, able to work to tight timelines and be comfortable working under pressure in an environment with shifting priorities.

Candidates should have the right to work in the UK and be available for employment ASAP within 1 month.

Note that, where needed, this position will require flexible working to cover evening and 7-day operations.

Key Responsibilities

Contribute to the execution of compound and functional genomic screens using cellular techniques and a quality mindset:

• Maintain multiple mammalian tissue culture cell lines in culture and conduct various cell-based assays
• Following training, independently perform detailed tasks under minimal supervision
• Process, record, and report all data generated in a precise and organized manner
• Present data and information clearly to internal stakeholders
• Identify and solve problems associated with processes or own activities
• Use resources effectively and hold self and others accountable for high standards
  
  

Essential Competencies & Requirements

• Degree in Biotechnology or Biological discipline (or equivalent experience) with experience in a cell biology laboratory setting
• A careful and meticulous nature with exceptional attention to detail
• Ability to work in a highly dynamic environment and on several different projects or tasks concurrently
• Ability to work to tight timelines and be able to manage a complex and busy workload.
• Flexible, adaptable, independent, resilient and able to work in a matrix-managed environment
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  
  

Desirable Competencies & Requirements

• Experience of working under a quality management system e.g ISO9001
• Extensive experience of cell culture and excellent aseptic technique
• Knowledge of lab information management systems (LIMS) and liquid handling robotic equipment (although full training will be provided)
• Experience with common cell biology techniques such as growth or imaging assays, ELISA, HTRF, Western blotting, CRISPR-Cas9 or si/shRNA techniques, FACS assays and cellular manipulation such as generation of stable cell lines etc
• Safe handling and production of lentiviral reagents
• Industry experience preferred
