Job Description

Job Overview:

 

London South Bank University is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed individual to work closely with the senior technician to provide support to the students and staff using the Psychology laboratories. They will assist with the organising and planning of day-to-day activities including booking of scheduled sessions, bespoke appointments and timetabled classes.

 

Other duties include assisting with the presentation and demonstration of technologies and processes to staff and students.

 

The Department:

 

Technical Support Services (TSS) provides dedicated technical support in the specialist workshops, laboratories, and studios spaces at LSBU. This multidisciplinary team of 60 technicians maintains over £12 million of equipment in over 180 specialist spaces across the campus. Our primary areas of support are Applied Sciences, The Arts and Creative Industries, The Built Environment & Architecture, Engineering and Health & Social Care. We also undertake bespoke projects for internal/external partners.

 

About the Psychology Laboratories:

 

The Psychology Laboratories is a well-equipped suite of laboratories that have been developed to support the School of Applied Sciences in its delivery of courses in Psychology related fields including addictive and health behaviours, applied developmental cognition, investigative forensic psychology, and lived experiences in mental health and distress. 

 

The facilities enable students, staff and external partners to undertake detailed scientific testing in an appropriate environment using a wide range of computing and experimental equipment. The facilities include observational suites, bio-psychological recording equipment (BIOPAC) for the collection of a wide range of physiological data, an eye tracking laboratory, dedicated computing rooms with experimental software, integrated testing facilities and a well-resourced psychometric library.

Contract Type and Working Hours

Full Time/ Fixed Term Contract up until 31st January, 2021 and working Monday – Friday, 35 hours a week currently on a remote basis.

 

Salary Information

Grade 4: £25,185 - £27,577

 

Employment Visa: Under the UK Governments PSB scheme this role does not meet the criteria to be sponsored by LSBU for a Skilled Worker Route (SWR) application.

Main Activities and Responsibilities   

 

1.     To work as an active member of the technical team in close collaboration with the academic staff and students to deliver high quality technical support in the Psychology laboratories.

 

2.     To assist with organising and planning the day-to-day operational activities in this area, taking an active role in the booking of scheduled sessions, bespoke appointments and timetabled classes.

 

3.     To assist with the presentation and demonstration of technologies, processes and/or associated equipment to groups of students, staff or other identified stakeholders as required.

 

4.     To assist with the cataloguing and storage of resources and specialist equipment, maintaining records as appropriate and working with colleagues to ensure availability of resources as required.

 

5.     To assist with efficient and safe management of the designated laboratory spaces, including participation in risk assessment, safety inspections / monitoring and other University Health & Safety procedures relevant to this area.

 

6.     Maintain, develop and broaden his/her own knowledge of processes, systems and procedures associated with the area evaluating and implement new technical advances, innovations in hardware, software or processes in line with professional practice.

 

7.     Undertake other temporary duties commensurate with the level of the role, as agreed through the appropriate line management structure to meet the requirements of the department.

 

Due to the nature of this student facing role it is expected that the post holder will not take annual leave during key points in the academic calendar. 

 

 

Selection Criteria

 

A.   A degree or equivalent educational / professional background in a relevant Psychology based discipline (E).

B.     Practical working knowledge and understanding of the use of specialist psychology related hardware/software (E). Proven ability in providing excellent technical support and/or technical demonstrations in either a related higher education or professional environment (E).

C.    Operational experience of Health and Safety issues (E)

D.     Excellent organisational, administrative and technical skills, being able to effectively communicate information using a variety of methods and use initiative to plan, prioritise and organise own varied workload and potentially that of others in a timely manner (E).

E. Able to demonstrate a commitment to continued learning, the willingness and ability to learn new skills in order to carry out the duties of the role, in a continuously evolving environment and identify own training needs when appropriate. (E).

F.     Ability to successfully undertake the projects and approach challenges/problems in a flexible, creative and proactive way (E). To be able to demonstrate good customer service skills and to a commitment to the provision of a quality service to both staff, students and to external stakeholders (E).

The post is full time and fixed term up until January, 2022
